The Battle Between Your Ears

Rev Martin Chipp-Smith
Where is your greatest battle being fought? In this message, Rev. Martin Chipp-Smith explores the spiritual battle for our minds and reminds us that, through Christ, we can take every thought captive and walk confidently in God’s good plans.

The Battle Between Your Ears: Winning the War Within

Every one of us is fighting a battle. While we often focus on the struggles around us—relationships, work, culture, or world events—the greatest battlefield isn’t out there. It’s the six inches between our ears. Scripture reminds us that our real battle is spiritual, and God has already equipped us with everything we need to walk in victory.

1. Our Greatest Battle Isn’t Against People—It’s Within Our Minds

When we think about warfare, we often picture armies, nations, or conflicts throughout history. Yet the greatest battle we face is the ongoing war for our thoughts. The enemy seeks to influence how we think about God, ourselves, and others, but our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12).

Whether we’re battling fear, anxiety, anger, shame, doubt, or discouragement, every one of us has a unique internal battle. The encouraging news is that Jesus has already won the ultimate victory over sin and death, and through Him we have authority to stand firm.

Key Scriptures: Matthew 24:6; Ephesians 6:12; John 16:33

2. God Has Given Us Spiritual Weapons for Victory

Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 10 that our weapons are not worldly—they are divinely powerful. God calls us to take every thought captive and bring it into obedience to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

That means we don’t have to accept every thought that enters our minds as truth. Instead, we can examine those thoughts against God’s Word and choose to surrender anything that doesn’t align with His character or His promises.

Victory often begins with daily surrender. Sometimes it means repeatedly bringing our fears, anger, pride, or unhealthy thinking before the Lord until He transforms us from the inside out.

Key Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Romans 12:2

3. The Flesh Pulls Us One Way, but the Spirit Leads Us Another

Our greatest struggle is often between our old nature and the life God is calling us into. Left to ourselves, our flesh naturally drifts toward selfishness and sin. But the Holy Spirit continually invites us to live differently.

Even the Apostle Paul admitted that he wrestled with this inner conflict (Romans 7:15-25). If someone as faithful as Paul experienced this battle, we shouldn’t be surprised when we do as well. The difference is that Christ offers freedom, not condemnation.

As we surrender our lives to Him, He gradually reshapes our thinking and produces His fruit within us.

Key Scriptures: John 6:63; Galatians 5:19-23; Romans 7:15-25

4. God Has Good Plans—Even When the Battle Feels Hard

One of the greatest lies we can believe is that our struggles define our future. The truth is that God has good plans for His children. Even when circumstances are difficult or our minds are overwhelmed, He remains faithful.

Sometimes God allows us to walk through difficult seasons so that He can strengthen us and prepare us to encourage someone else. The victories He works in our lives today become testimonies that bring hope to others tomorrow.

So I want to leave you with this question: What is happening in your “six-inch war” today? Is there something you’ve been holding onto that needs to be surrendered to Jesus?

He’s already won the battle. The invitation extended to us is simply to trust Him, walk with Him, and believe that His plans are truly good.
