God’s invitation is always open—but too often our excuses get in the way.
Luke 14 reminds us that God has equipped us for every opportunity He places before us. Rather than allowing fear, busyness, or comfort to keep us on the sidelines, it challenges us to trust Him, step out in faith, and discover the deeper life He has prepared for us.
As you watch, reflect on this one simple question: What excuse is God asking you to surrender today?
Don’t Excuse Yourself
I have a question for you: Is it well with your soul? Sometimes we sing those words with confidence. Other times we’re carrying burdens, disappointments, fears, or uncertainty that make them difficult to say. Yet every time we gather, God comes ready to meet us. The question is whether we’ll receive what He wants to give us—or whether we’ll excuse ourselves from His invitation.
1. God Has Already Extended His Invitation
In Luke 14:16–24, Jesus tells the story of a great banquet where those who had originally accepted the invitation all began making excuses. One had purchased a field, while another had bought oxen — and yet another had just been married. On the surface, their reasons sounded reasonable, but beneath the surface lay a deeper truth—they were simply prioritizing other things over the invitation.
The same challenge confronts us today. God continually invites us into a deeper relationship with Him, but it’s easy to become distracted by work, responsibilities, comfort, or even fear. We can become so busy with life that we miss what God is offering.

2. Excuses Keep Us from God’s Best
We all make excuses. Sometimes they’re practical, sometimes they’re emotional, and sometimes they’re rooted in fear or insecurity. I’ve experienced that myself.
Recently I felt prompted to pray for someone in public, but I hesitated. In that moment, fear won. Afterward, I realized I’d allowed excuses to silence my obedience. Those moments remind me that following Jesus often requires stepping beyond what’s comfortable.
God has already equipped us through His Holy Spirit. Rather than focusing on why we can’t, He calls us to trust Him and take the next faithful step.

3. Every Believer Is Called to Share Christ
Not everyone is called to stand behind a pulpit, but every follower of Jesus is called to live as His witness.
Our world desperately needs hope, and God has uniquely placed each of us among family, friends, neighbours, and coworkers who may never hear the Gospel unless we share what Christ has done in our own lives.
If we long to see God’s Kingdom grow, it begins with ordinary believers being willing to say “yes” instead of finding reasons to say “no.”

4. Don’t Leave God’s Gifts Unopened
One illustration that challenged me recently compared God’s blessings to gifts waiting under a Christmas tree. Imagine standing before Jesus one day and discovering there were gifts He had prepared specifically for you—but you never opened them.
I don’t want to live that way.
I don’t want to coast through life on spiritual autopilot or settle for yesterday’s experience with God. But what I really do want is more of His presence, more of His transforming work, and more opportunities to reflect His love to others.
Whatever fears or excuses we’ve carried, today is an opportunity to lay them down and respond to His invitation with open hands and willing hearts.

A Final Challenge
As we look ahead, I’m praying that God will do something fresh among us—not only during our upcoming church camp but in every ordinary day leading up to it.
