Everybody Needs a Sherpa: Following God’s Guidance Through Life’s Mountains
Life can often feel like climbing a mountain. There are unexpected obstacles, deep valleys, and moments when we wonder if we have the strength to keep going. As I reflected on the challenges of climbing Mount Everest, I was reminded of a powerful spiritual truth: none of us were meant to navigate life’s journey alone. We need a Sherpa guide. Jesus, the ultimate Sherpa, has given us His presence, His Word, and one another to help us reach the destination He has prepared for us.
1. God Calls Us to Be Influencers and Guides for Others
Paul referred to Timothy as “my son,” not because they were related by blood, but because they shared a spiritual relationship. So Paul invested in Timothy’s life — taught him, encouraged him, and challenged him to do the same for others.
The Christian faith has been passed from one generation to the next through people who were willing to mentor, encourage, and guide others. Whether we are parents, grandparents, teachers, leaders, or friends, God calls each of us to influence someone else’s journey of faith.
The question is not whether we are influencing others—but what kind of influence we are having.
2. Jesus Is the Ultimate Sherpa for the Journey of Life
Climbing Mount Everest is nearly impossible without an experienced Sherpa to guide climbers through dangerous terrain. In much the same way, Jesus walks alongside us through the challenges of life.
When Jesus looked upon the crowds and saw people who were weary, harassed, helpless, and in need of guidance, His response was compassion. He invited people to come to Him for rest, strength, and direction.
Too often we focus only on salvation and forget the daily blessing of walking with Christ. He is our guide when the path is unclear, our strength when we are weary, and our source of life when we feel like we cannot take another step.
3. God Gives Us Strength for the Impossible Seasons
There are moments when life leaves us breathless. We face circumstances we never expected and challenges we don’t know how to overcome. Yet again and again, God proves Himself faithful.
Just as Sherpas monitor climbers’ oxygen supplies and watch over their well-being, God watches over His children. He knows the path ahead. He sees the dangers we cannot see. He understands the storms before they arrive.
Many of us can testify to seasons when we cried out to God and discovered strength we didn’t know we had. The reason is simple: God was breathing life into us when we needed it most.
4. We Need One Another Along the Journey
1 Thessalonians 5:11, 1 Thessalonians 5:14
The Christian life was never meant to be lived in isolation. Thus, Paul instructed believers to encourage one another, comfort the fainthearted, help the weak, and practice patience with everyone.
That is what spiritual mothers and fathers do — and they do it with patience — with a Sherpa heart.
The church is strongest when mature believers come alongside those who are younger in faith, offering wisdom, encouragement, and practical support. Sometimes people need correction. Sometimes they need comfort. Sometimes they simply need someone willing to walk beside them through a difficult season.
We all need people in our lives who can help us navigate the mountain.
5. Leave a Legacy That Helps Others Reach the Summit
Paul challenged Titus to teach and model godly living so that future generations would be strengthened in their faith. Sound doctrine is not simply something we believe—it is something we live.
As we grow in Christ, we are called to become guides for others. We may never stand on a platform or hold a title, but we can invest in people, share wisdom, offer encouragement, and point others toward Jesus.
A life of faithful influence leaves a lasting legacy. Long after we are gone, the lives we have touched will continue to bear fruit for God’s Kingdom.
Reflection
Every one of us needs a Sherpa. We need Jesus Christ to guide us through the challenges of life, and we need faithful people around us to encourage us along the way.
No matter where you are on your journey today, God knows the path ahead. He sees the obstacles, understands the challenges, and promises to walk with you every step of the way.
As the hymn reminds us:
“Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
