Finding Confidence in Remembering

Rev Scott Cross

We continue our series on the Psalms of Confidence by focusing on a simple but powerful question: Who do you say God is? When life feels uncertain, when troubles surround us, and when we don’t know what tomorrow holds, God invites us to remember His faithfulness and place our confidence in Him.

Finding Confidence in Remembering
: Do You Really Know Who Your God Is?

1. Confidence Grows Through Remembering Who God Is

Drawing from Psalm 46:1-10 and Jesus’ conversation with His disciples at Caesarea Philippi (Matthew 16:13-16), we are reminded that every generation faces challenges, fears, and competing voices. Yet God still asks His people, “Who do you say I am?” Remembering what God has done in the past strengthens our confidence in Him.

Our confidence is not built on circumstances but on the unchanging character of God. The world may shift around us, but God remains our refuge, strength, and ever-present help in trouble.

2. God’s Past Faithfulness Gives Us Confidence for Today

One of the most important spiritual practices is remembering what God has already done. I shared the image of a shepherd’s staff, marked with notches that represented moments when God had intervened and provided.

Just as David could say, “Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4), we can look back at our own stories and see God’s fingerprints throughout our lives. Every answered prayer, every unexpected provision, and every moment of divine help becomes a reminder that the God who was faithful then will be faithful now.

3. In Difficult Seasons, God Invites Us to Be Still

Psalm 4 teaches us a different response to anxiety. Instead of creating fearful “movies” in our minds about everything that could go wrong, God calls us to quiet our hearts before Him.

“Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still” (Psalm 4:4).

I encouraged the congregation to think about times when God came through for them. Throughout the service, people shared powerful testimonies of provision, healing, answered prayer, restored hope, and God’s presence during overwhelming circumstances. These stories reminded us that God is still at work today.

4. Testimonies Build Faith for the Future

One theme echoed through every testimony: God showed up when there seemed to be no way forward.

Whether it was financial provision, healing from illness, comfort in grief, restored relationships, or unexpected answers to prayer, each story pointed to the same truth: God remains faithful to His people.

When we share what God has done, we strengthen one another’s faith and remind the next generation that God is still moving, still answering prayer, and still keeping His promises.

5. Great Is His Faithfulness

We concluded by reflecting on the timeless truth that God’s character never changes. As the hymn reminds us, “Morning by morning new mercies I see.” God’s faithfulness in the past becomes the foundation for our confidence in the future.

No matter what challenge we face today, we can rest in the assurance that the Lord who carried us before will carry us again.

The question remains:

Who do you think your God is?

If He has been faithful before, we can trust Him to be faithful again.
