What if God wants to reveal more of His heart to you than you ever imagined?
In this encouraging message, Rev. Hartley Smith explores Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 2 and 12, reminding us that the Holy Spirit not only comforts us — He guides us, speaks to us, gives us wisdom, and empowers us to minister to others in everyday life.
Discover the wonderful things God has freely given His people and how the Holy Spirit still works through ordinary believers today.
The Wonderful Things God Has Freely Given Us
When we read Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 2, we often stop at the beautiful promise that “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind has conceived” all that God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9). But Paul doesn’t stop there. He immediately reminds us that God has freely given these things to us, revealing them through His Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10). That truth becomes the heart of our reflection together.
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:9–16; 1 Corinthians 12
1. God Wants to Share His Heart With Us
The Holy Spirit is not distant or reserved. Paul tells us that the Spirit searches even the deep things of God and reveals them to His people (1 Corinthians 2:10-12). In other words, God is not hiding His goodness from us; rather, He delights in making His heart known.
As believers, we have been given the Spirit so that we may understand what God has freely given us. The Christian life is not meant to be lived through human wisdom alone, but through a growing relationship with the Holy Spirit, who teaches, guides, and reveals God’s truth to us.
2. Spiritual Discernment Comes Through Closeness to God
Paul explains that spiritual realities are discerned through the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14-16). So it is that as we walk closely with the Lord, He helps us recognize what is true, what is from Him, and what is not.
This discernment is not about becoming critical or judgmental. Rather, it is about developing a sensitivity to God’s voice and His leading. The more we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, the more clearly we can recognize His work in our lives and in the lives of others.
3. The Holy Spirit Manifests the Life of Jesus Through Us
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul begins describing what God has freely given His people through the Holy Spirit. These manifestations are not trophies for spiritual people; they are expressions of Christ’s life working through ordinary believers.
Whether it is a word of wisdom, a word of knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, discernment, or another manifestation of the Spirit, each one points people to Jesus and demonstrates that He is Lord (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
Throughout the Gospels, we see these same expressions in the life of Jesus. The Holy Spirit desires to continue revealing Christ through His people today.
4. God Can Use Us in Simple Yet Powerful Ways
Sometimes we imagine that the work of the Spirit must always appear dramatic. Yet many of God’s greatest moments happen through simple acts of obedience.
A timely word of encouragement, a question asked at just the right moment, or an expression of honour and kindness can become a channel through which God ministers deeply to someone else’s heart. The Holy Spirit knows what people need far better than we do, and He is able to work through us when we remain available to Him.
As Proverbs 25:11 reminds us, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
5. These Gifts Are Not Just for a Few—They Are for All of God’s People
My encouragement to us all is this: the things Paul describes are not reserved for a select few believers. The Holy Spirit delights in teaching, guiding, comforting, strengthening, and ministering through every follower of Christ.
The “things that God has freely given us” (1 Corinthians 2:12) are available to us as we yield ourselves to the Spirit’s leading. He longs to reveal the heart of the Father, build up the church, and make Jesus known through our lives.
May we remain open to His voice, sensitive to His leading, and eager to experience all that God has prepared for His people.
