Communion — Love Feast with Jesus

Rev Hartley Smith

The Lord’s Table is more than a tradition — it is a “love feast” with Jesus. Through Scripture, personal reflection, and beautiful imagery from Jewish wedding customs, this sermon reminds us of Christ’s deep love, the gift of His grace, and the hope of one day celebrating with Him in the Father’s Kingdom.

Communion — Our Love Feast with Jesus

This morning, I want us to see communion not simply as a religious ritual, but as a beautiful love feast with Jesus. As we reflect on the words of Christ in The Gospel of Luke and The Gospel of John, we are reminded once again of how deeply Jesus longs to gather His people around His table in love, grace, and fellowship.

Scripture: John 6:53–63; Luke 22:14–20

1. Communion Is a Celebration of Christ’s Love for Us

When Jesus said, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you” (Luke 22:15), I believe He was expressing the deep longing of His heart for relationship with His people. Communion is not merely a ceremony we repeat — it is an invitation into fellowship with the Lord Himself.

As we gather around the table together, we are reminded that Jesus delights in His people. This meal points us to His love, His sacrifice, and His desire to bring humanity into communion with God.

Key Scriptures:

Revelation 19:9

Luke 22:14–20

John 13:1

2. We Receive the Life of Christ Through His Word and Spirit

In John 6, Jesus talks about eating His flesh and drinking His blood. Many interpret this passage differently, but I believe that Jesus was speaking spiritually — inviting us to receive His life, His teachings, and His truth deep within our hearts.

When we take the bread, we remember that we have received the living Word of God. Eternal life is not simply something waiting for us in heaven one day; it is the life of Christ living within us right now through the Holy Spirit.

I feel strongly that many believers need to stop living under the weight of old failures and condemnation. Through Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we are called to walk forward in freedom and grace.

Key Scriptures:

John 10:10

John 6:53–63

James 1:21

Romans 8:1

3. Communion Reminds Us That Righteousness Is a Gift

One of the truths I want to emphasize is that we cannot earn the grace of God. Deep down, many of us still think there is something we must do to make ourselves acceptable to Him. But communion reminds us that our righteousness comes entirely through Jesus Christ.

The bread and the cup declare that His body was broken and His blood was shed for us. Because of His sacrifice, we are forgiven, cleansed, and made right with God.

As believers, we do not need to live trapped in guilt or endlessly revisit the past. Christ has covered our sins through His redeeming blood.

Key Scriptures:

Romans 5:1

Ephesians 2:8–9

Hebrews 10:10–14

Psalm 103:12

4. Communion Points Us Toward the Great Feast Yet to Come

Jesus is making the connection between communion and the imagery of a Galilean wedding. He uses language His disciples would have recognized — the language of covenant, preparation, and a coming celebration.

Just as a bridegroom prepares a place for his bride, Jesus is preparing a place for His people. Every time we take communion, we are not only remembering the cross — we are also looking forward to the day we will sit with Him in the Father’s Kingdom.

That future hope fills me with joy. Communion reminds us that the story is not over. A glorious love feast still awaits the people of God.

Key Scriptures:

Luke 22:18

John 14:1–3

Matthew 25:1–13

Revelation 19:6–9

Final Reflection

My heart is full of gratitude for the beauty of communion. This feast reminds us that we are deeply loved by Christ, fully forgiven through His sacrifice, and invited into eternal fellowship with Him.

Every time we eat the bread and drink the cup, we remember His grace — and we look ahead with hope to the day we will celebrate with Him forever in the Father’s house.
