Keep Knocking

Rev Martin Chipp-Smith
What do knock-knock jokes have to do with faith? More than you might think! Peter the Apostle was imprisoned by Herod Agrippa I, but the church that refused to stop praying.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your prayers are being heard, this message will remind you of Jesus’ promise: keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking.

Keep Knocking

In this message, Rev Martin Chipp-Smith explores a powerful story from Acts 12, where the early church faced persecution but responded with persistent prayer, knocking on heaven’s door. Through the imprisonment and miraculous rescue of Peter the Apostle, God heard the prayers of His people. He hears us too and calls us to seek Him with persistence, faith, and gratitude.

Opposition to the Gospel Is Real

The early church experienced significant persecution. Herod Agrippa I attempted to silence the growing Christian movement by targeting its leaders. He executed the Apostle James, he then imprisoned Peter during the Passover celebration.

“He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also.”
Acts 12:2–3

This moment reminds believers that the church has always faced opposition. Yet even in the midst of hardship, God continues to accomplish His purposes.

The Church’s Most Powerful Weapon Is Prayer

While Peter sat chained in prison and guarded by soldiers, the church gathered together and prayed fervently. James was dead, but they, nevertheless, prayed for Peter.

“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.”
Acts 12:5

Indeed, their prayer was not casual—it was persistent and united. Scripture often calls believers to pray with this kind of passion and dependence on God.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16

This passage challenges us to rediscover the power of corporate as well as personal prayer.

God Moves in Unexpected Ways

In response to the church’s prayers, God sent an angel to rescue Peter. Chains fell from his wrists, guards remained unaware, and prison doors opened as he walked out to freedom.

“Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared… and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.”
Acts 12:7

When Peter arrived at the home where believers were praying, a servant named Rhoda recognized his voice—but in her excitement she forgot to open the door.

“Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.”
Acts 12:16

Even those who were praying struggled to believe the miracle had happened. Similarly, God’s faithfulness often exceeds our expectations.

Keep Knocking: The Call to Persistent Faith

Be persistent in prayer— as Jesus Himself taught, continue to seek God even when answers seem delayed.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Gospel of Luke 11:9

Jesus also shared the parable of the persistent widow to show that believers should never give up in prayer.

“They should always pray and not give up.”
Luke 18:1

Persistent prayer, thus, reflects trust that God hears and responds according to His wisdom and timing.

Four Ways to Keep Knocking

1. Knock with Prayer
Seek God first in every circumstance.

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness.”
Matthew 6:33

2. Knock with Gratitude
Approach God with thanksgiving and praise.

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.”
Psalm 100:4

3. Knock with Perseverance
Do not give up when answers seem delayed.

“Ask… seek… knock.”
Luke 11:9–10

4. Knock with Faith
Finally, trust God with your requests and rely on His peace.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Philippians 4:6–7

Final Encouragement

Whether we are praying for direction, healing, family, or spiritual renewal, God invites us to come to Him with persistence and faith. Just as the early church prayed for Peter, we must likewise seek God with earnest hearts.

And as Jesus Christ reminded His followers, those who continue to seek Him will certainly find that the door is always open. So don’t give up—keep praying, keep trusting, and keep knocking.
